Ground Cover Supplement : GC Supplement - Growers sharing knowledge
3 GROWERS SHARING KNOWLEDGE GROUND COVER contribution from other organisations including state departments. Where projects performed poorly in one or more of these criteria the survey reported a poorer BCR. Social Successful grower groups have some key factors in common. One is the people involved. The research found that successful groups have individuals who are inspired and have vision. These people generally invest a large amount of time in the group but enjoy the mental stimulation, the sharing of knowledge, the challenge of meeting a need and the friendship and support of being part of the group. For example, one group committee member reported: “I put in 20 hours a week. The information I gain is worth about $3000 a year, and I’m a quick adopter, so what I do with it makes $30,000.” However, there was common concern that key players can suffer burnout due to the time required. The report highlighted this as an area that needs to be addressed. Community development was found to flow naturally from the farming systems groups. Groups were aware that training members brought expertise to other local committees. Those members trained in leadership or group process would naturally take these skills to the sports, church and school committees. Another social benefit has been the creation of jobs, particularly in isolated communities. These jobs range from coordinators to trials officers. The presence of a group in a region has shown to increase the demand for private agronomists in that region. Environmental Environmental sustainability was not always considered as part of the project objectives.
